Information for Parents
Strathmore Secondary College strives to create learning environments that are authentic, engaging and improve learning outcomes for all of our students. Our aim is to give our students every advantage educationally for their futures. Technology is an essential part of this endeavour. We believe that the balanced and appropriate use of technology can stimulate interest, increase proficiency and support differentiated learning pathways for our students. From 2017, with School Council approval, the College will continue to utilise technology in the classroom with iPads in a “Bring Your Own Device” model. Consequently, all students will be required to have an iPad ready to be used by the first day school. What does a Bring Your Own Device model (BYOD) mean? Students supply their own iPad to use at school. They may use an iPad the family already owns (as long as it fits the requirements listed below) or families have the option to purchase an appropriate iPad device from one of the many iPad retail outlets. The iPad remains the property of the family and all maintenance and repairs are the responsibility of the family. The school will only provide technical support for issues associated with connecting iPads to the school network. We strongly advise parents to purchase the extended Apple warranty. iPad Minimum Requirements:
If you are buying an iPad, you must buy a model iOS 12 (or above) operating system compatible as a minimum. This operating system is required to run required applications. Minimum screen size is 24.6 mm (9.5 inches) diagonally and resolution 1024 x 768 at 32,000 colours. iPad Mini is not suitable. Required:

Acceptable Use and Classroom Use Protocols At the start of the school year, all students will be required to agree to an Acceptable Use Policy and will also be made aware of the Strathmore Secondary College Protocols for iPads. Use of iPads in Class: The College is mindful of not only the technological resources that will engage students in learning but how these activities will improve student outcomes. To this end, it is not expected that the devices will be used in every class, every day. They will be used initially as a substitute for many textbooks and, following that, as required to effectively help students engage in higher order thinking and problem solving. Teachers will make those decisions based on their own knowledge of their field of study and experience with proven and appropriate teaching methodology. Using technology for technology’s sake is not a good application of instructional time or funding, and is unlikely to improve student achievement. It is expected that all students will bring an iPad which meets the requirements listed above on the first day of school. |
